Appointments and Insurance

Do you have a Cancellation Policy?

We do not have a formal cancellation policy, but appreciate notice of a canceled appointment 72 hours beforehand.

Do I need a referral?

If your insurance company requires a referral to a specialist, you will need to obtain the referral and bring it with you to your appointment.
Your primary physician may be able to assist you with this. Please note that a prescription from your primary physician is not a referral. It is the patient’s responsibility to know when a referral is necessary. Unfortunately, we cannot continue with your visit if you need a referral and do not have one.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your insurance card, a photo ID and your list of medications to every appointment. You also may bring your actual medications with you.

What is my Co-pay?

Co-pays differ depending on your insurance company and plan. You can find out what your Co-pay is by calling your insurance company; it also may be printed on your insurance card. All Co-pays are due at the time of your office visit. We accept cash, check, debit card and credit card. We do not accept American Express.

How do I get prescription refills?

Please call our office or your local pharmacy for prescription refills. No refills are made on weekends or nights. The covering physicians are not responsible for refills.

In what insurances do you participate?

We participate in most major insurance plans including:
Horizon BCBS, Federal BCBS, United Healthcare/Oxford, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, Medicare Advantage United/Oxford, Amerihealth, Clover, GHI Emblem, Tricare, Humana, Magnacare, Mailhandlers, Barnabus health, Qualcare, Aetna Medicare, & Multiplans.

Furthermore, for most insurances we are considered Tier 1. Please call our office to determine if we participate in your specific plan. Our insurance specialists  will work with your insurance even if you have out-of-network benefits. We do not par with Medicaid plans at this time.

How do I obtain pre-certification or pre-authorization from my insurance company?

Our office can arrange for your pre-certification or pre-authorization after your office visit.

PREP AND PROCEDURES

WHAT KIND OF PREP WILL I BE GIVEN?

Every procedure requires a different prep and dietary rules and restrictions. Typically, you are advised to drink water while taking the prep to prevent dehydration, and not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before your procedure. The doctor will prescribe the best prep solution for you, based on your individual needs and the procedure to be performed, and always with safety first in mind. You will be given specific instructions about your prep and diet at the time of your pre-procedure office visit. If you have any questions, you can call either Dr. Guss’ or Dr. Beri’s nurse. You may be instructed to take part of your prep after midnight. Follow your instructions carefully.

WHAT DO I DO IF THE PREP DOESN’T WORK?

In the vast majority of cases, the prep solution does work. If you are unsure, you can call our office and the message will be passed on to the on-call physician, who will decide whether or not you should continue with the prep and your procedure. You may use a Fleet enema. Do not take anything by mouth without discussing with the doctor.

WHAT IF I HAVE DIABETES?

Please contact your primary physician or endocrinologist about taking your regular medications.

HOW WILL I KNOW THE TIME OF MY PROCEDURE?

Dr. Guss and Dr. Beri perform procedures at Advanced Endoscopy & Surgical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) and Monmouth Medical Center. You must register with JSUMC by calling 732-776-4800. Wherever you are having your procedure, that facility will confirm your appointment time the day before you are scheduled. Please note that the time of your appointment may differ from what our office has told you, due to scheduling changes at the surgical facility. If you do not receive a call by 4 pm the day before, contact our office.

DO I NEED SOMEONE TO DRIVE ME TO MY PROCEDURE?

Yes. By state law, you must have a person 18 years or older drive you to your appointment and escort you into your home afterward. This individual must sign you in and out and be readily available during your procedure. Please note, you will not be allowed to go back home after your procedure by taxi or Uber.
